East Africa V1.0.0

Don’t let the version number deceive you – its our first East-African classifier, but its as good as the Southern-African one!

As mentioned in our previous classifier release, we are in the process of re-training our African species classifiers. In order to maximise performance, we have chosen to split out our singular sub-Saharan classifier into regional classifiers where we can drop non-endemic species, thus reducing the number of classes and preventing unnecessary confusion between similar-looking species.

In line with this, we announce the release of our new East-African classifier which is intended to roughly cover from South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania Eastward – although your mileage might vary depending on your particular biome and the species present (we all know the applicability of political boundaries in this scenario). Simply refer to the species list for each classifier and choose the most-applicable one.

Notably, this new model provides wider regional-species coverage – now covering 81 different species – whilst also offering significantly improved classification performance over the sub-Saharan classifier.

In comparison to the Southern-African model, this classifier has dropped the following species:

  • Brown hyena
  • Tsessebe
  • Cape fox
  • Lechwe
  • Springbok
  • Meerkat
  • Nyala
  • Grey rhebok
  • Black wildebeest
  • Bontebok

Instead, the following have been added:

  • Striped hyena
  • Gerenuk
  • Grant’s gazelle
  • Thomson’s gazelle
  • Giant forest hog
  • Topi
  • Dromedary camel
  • Common Patas monkey
  • Harvey’s red duiker

As usual, any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!
